Safety in Schools The Senate discussed two of my bills on the Senate Floor this week.
The first, Senate Bill 166, which the Senate passed, requires all schools, starting next year, to adopt a cardiac emergency response plan. The plan would adhere to American Heart Association guidelines and involve automated external defibrillator (AED) placement. I believe legislation like this saves lives. In fact, one school’s plan saved a man’s life at a football game in Higginsville who collapsed while watching the game and likely would have died if there hadn’t been AEDs on hand. This bill could be life-saving for a student, parent, teacher or anyone else who may ever visit a school campus.
Secondly, Senate Bill 80, which the Senate perfected, allows high school athletes to seek compensation for their name, image and likeness. This allows proud Missouri athletes to potentially have access to life-changing funds for themselves and their families. It seems to me that if someone is going to profit off them, they should get a cut themselves.
