Fighting Against Cancer

Hello from your favorite senator, Angela Mosley! This week the Senate heard a number of pieces of my legislation that strengthen the fight against cancer.

First, the Insurance and Banking Committee heard my Senate Bill 824 this week. This bill ensures that genetic testing is covered by health plans for individuals who have a family history of cancer. This will help to identify harmful mutations and allow patients to start the fight against cancer as early as possible. The bill also prevents insurance companies from using these test results against patients when determining coverage.

In addition, Senate Bill 263 moved through the Families, Seniors and Health Committee this week. This bill creates the Cancer Patients’ Bill of Rights, ensuring patients understand the treatments available to them and the full extent of their diagnosis. It also sheds light on the timetables and costs necessary for treatment.

Together, I believe these bills will help cancer patients focus on treatment and health.

In other news, my Senate Bill 378 passed out of the Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee since I spoke to you last. This bill establishes rights for inmates and creates an office of review to ensure the rights of inmates are being fulfilled. I believe it is important to make sure correction facilities are focused on correction rather than punishment.

Additionally, Senate Bill 777 had its hearing in the Progress and Development Committee. This bill seeks to bring awareness to gun violence by naming June 17th Neighborhood Gun Violence Prevention Day in honor of Preston Ja’mon “Tink” Jones, Sr. who died to senseless gun violence.

Together, we can make a difference.
