Fighting for Proposition A

Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley! Since I last spoke with you, I have spent much of my time opposing House Bill 567, helping to filibuster and delay any action on this bill both last week and this week.

I felt the need to take a stand against HB 567, which would reverse Proposition A. Approved by voters, Proposition A raised the minimum wage to $13.75 and would raise it again to $15.00 at the new year. After that point, it would continue to raise the minimum wage based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which helps track inflation and the cost of goods. However, if HB 567 was to pass, it would make it so the minimum wage would not automatically increase and instead require us to fight for every additional increase in future years.

In addition, Proposition A also established an employee’s right to sick leave and ensure every employee in Missouri had the ability to take off work when sick, but HB 567 would remove guaranteed sick leave for Missouri employees.

So far, I, along with many of my colleagues, have been successful in keeping this bill from passing.

Also, I spoke at “The Adults are Listening,” Safer Summer Streets Planning Presentation alongside Breaking Generational Poverty Foundation Inc. (BGP) and Mama’s Against Homicides at the capitol this week.

This event brings awareness to the violence our community faces every spring. Every year these months are the deadliest. Every year we see a long list of homicides filled with the names of youth. It is difficult to cope with the fact that this increased violence has become normalized to our community. But every year, our community works harder to push back. I am proud of the work BGP has done coming forward to fight this cycle of violence in our communities.
