Senator Ben Brown’s Proposal to Ban Foreign Influence in Elections Passes Legislature

Jefferson City — Missouri’s initiative petition process will be more thoroughly protected from influence by foreign nationals and contributions, thanks to the passage of Senate Bill 152 on May 15.

The landmark legislation, sponsored by Sen. Ben Brown, R-Washington, will close the loopholes in current statute that have allowed foreign nationals to influence the state’s initiative petition process. Now awaiting the governor’s signature, Sen. Brown says SB 152 addresses this growing threat to Missouri’s sovereignty.

“Strengthening the integrity of our initiative petition process has been a top priority of mine for years, and it’s imperative that any changes to our Constitution be reflective of the values of Missourians, rather than outside special interests,” said Sen. Brown. “For far too long, foreign billionaires have been funneling millions of dollars into our state to influence elections and hijack our constitution. This legislation will put a stop to this by ensuring Missourians, not foreign interests, are the ones determining the best policies for our state.”
