The End of Session
Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley! Session is officially over. The budget is done, and the last bills have been passed.
I regret to say that despite my best efforts alongside many of my colleagues, a group of senators ended discussion and forced the vote on House Bill 567 and House Joint Resolution 73. These bills are aimed at removing a substantial part of the laws that were passed as Amendment 3 and Proposition A last November. I am deeply troubled by the majority’s choice to ignore the people’s decisions from this past election and instead push for their own priorities.
Despite these losses, much was accomplished this session. Specifically, my legislation creating the Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls Task Force passed as a part of House Bill 495. This task force will seek out issues and solutions to better protect these pillars of our communities. I also received the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) Outstanding Leadership Award as appreciation for my efforts in creating the task force.
Finally, the governor has called an extra session of the General Assembly. That means the Senate and House of Representatives will meet again next week to discuss a few specific topics. The governor has called the extra session to discuss funding assistance options for new or upgraded stadiums for Kansas City sports teams, in an effort to keep them in Missouri; to supply disaster aid; and to pass portions of House Bill 19, an over $500 million budget bill which covered a variety of capital improvement projects in Missouri.
