Statement from Sen. Jill Carter Calling for Peace Amidst Possibility of Violent Protests

Jefferson City — State Sen. Jill Carter, R-Granby, today issued a statement relating to the possibility of violent protests and riots allegedly being planned across Missouri:

"As your senator I stand firmly for your right to protest and speak freely. But let me be clear: No one has the right to destroy businesses, injure law enforcement or incite chaos.

State government officials have been briefed and are well aware that local groups with national ties may be planning events in Missouri that go far beyond peaceful protests. Instead, they seem to be intent on obstructing federal law enforcement and inciting riots.

I strongly support the governor in his decision to prepare the Missouri National Guard and have them at the ready in the event these plans materialize. I also plan to introduce legislation at the first opportunity that ensures any group inciting or coordinating violent protests – regardless of funding sources – will face felony charges, asset forfeiture and civil lawsuits.

I ask all Missourians to stand for peace. Speak your mind, but stand with law and order.

We will protect your families. We will protect your businesses. We will never surrender our state to violence.”
