Building Our Community

Hello from your favorite Senator Angela Mosley! I want to take some time to highlight a few resources and events in our community that could benefit you and your family.

It was recently determined that Coldwater Creek in North St. Louis County was contaminated with Manhattan Project nuclear waste. Families of people who died from radiation-linked cancers are eligible for $25,000, and those who survived the cancers are eligible for $50,000 under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. The Act was expanded to include 21 ZIP codes near Coldwater Creek. Those eligible can gather residency and medical records for when applications open at justice.gov/civil/common/reca

St. Louis County’s Children’s Service Fund (CSF) will start accepting application on Sept. 8 and end on Oct. 30. If you want to learn more the CSF will hold two public meetings to discuss eligibility. The first is Thursday, Aug. 14 and the second is Tuesday, Aug. 19. They will be held from 9–10:30 a.m at The Crossing at 500 Northwest Plaza Drive in St. Ann. You can register at stlcsf.org/how-we-fund/core-funding/.

The Little Bit Foundation is providing community grants to other organizations focused on serving the youth in our community. They are accepting applications until Aug. 8 and giving priority to organizations assisting with disaster relief. You find the application through thelittlebitfoundation.org.

This is a reminder that the deadline for FEMA disaster relief for the storms on May 16 is Aug. 11. If you have not yet done so, I urge you to apply for assistance. If you have any questions you can visit one of the disaster recovery centers I have listed below.

In addition, you may be eligible for rent assistance or Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). You can request rent assistance through a disaster recovery center or by calling 1-800-621-3362. The deadline for DUA is Aug. 8 and can be applied for online at uinteract.labor.mo.gov/benefits.

Even if you did not have a home or had non-traditional housing, there is a chance you may qualify for some form of FEMA aid. You would need a signed written letter from an official source confirming your unique circumstances by providing the applicants name, current address, pre-disaster address the name, title and contact information of who is providing this information.

There are also a number of new initiatives to help with the disaster recovery, including emergency stabilization, electricity reconnection, Ask an Architect and contractor registry. You can find details on each of these programs at:
stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/mayor/news/new-recovery-programs.cfm.

Finally, a couple of community events coming up. The first is the Community Resource Fair & Backpack Giveaway this Saturday, Aug. 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gymnasium at 1 James J. Eagan Drive, Florissant, MO 63033. While supplies last, this annual event provides backpacks, haircuts and food. There will also be information for Medicaid and Medicare, utility assistance and workforce development.

The second is the Junior Chef Cohort hosted by the Kidss for Kidss Foundation and Rep. Chanel Mosley, my daughter, on Aug. 7 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Children will learn cooking skills, etiquette and business skills. Participants will help harvest food then use the ingredients to make pizzas.  They have partnered with A Red Circle to provide this event for the community. Children between the ages of 10 and 16 can register at:
